ST PATRICK'S COLLEGE MORVEN BUILDING

St Patrick's College O'Connor Building
At the heart of St Patrick's College stands the historic Morven Building, a testament to Queensland's colonial architecture and educational heritage. As part of an ongoing masterplan, this landmark structure has undergone a thoughtful transformation that bridges its 1860s origins with contemporary educational needs. The challenge lay in modernizing the building's administrative facilities while preserving its rich heritage character. Our approach focused on creating a harmonious balance between historical preservation and modern functionality, resulting in a renovation that respects the past while serving present-day requirements. Key elements of the renovation showcase this delicate balance. Original features, including lime plaster walls, period fireplaces, and distinctive horsehair plasterboard ceilings, were meticulously restored to their former glory. These historical elements now sit comfortably alongside contemporary additions, such as glass partitions that maintain the building's spatial flow while providing necessary privacy for administrative functions. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the project came through an unexpected discovery. During renovation works, the team uncovered an intact 1860s beehive well - a finding that offered unique insights into the building's colonial history. Rather than concealing this historical treasure, it was transformed into an educational feature, complete with special lighting and a glass covering that allows staff and students to literally peer into their school's past. Technical challenges, particularly rising damp - a common issue in heritage buildings - were addressed through innovative solutions. The installation of a suspended concrete slab with mechanical ventilation and a perimeter air drain ensures the building's longevity while preserving its historical integrity. The result is more than just a renovation; it's a celebration of architectural heritage that serves modern educational needs. The revitalized Morven Building stands as a polished, well-equipped administrative hub that remains firmly rooted in the school's rich history. This thoughtful refurbishment demonstrates how heritage buildings can be successfully adapted for contemporary use while preserving their historical significance for future generations.
